League
The whole league on a few charts: who controls play, who got lucky, where shots come from, and how games are won and lost.
Where goals come from
Model-basedVolume isn’t value. A shot from the slot is worth several from the blue line, which is why coaches preach getting to the middle of the ice.
Every unblocked 5-on-5 attempt of the season: 3,231 of them, and 201 goals. Darker zones convert more often.
| Zone | Share of attempts and of goals | Sh% |
|---|---|---|
| Inner slot | 26% 50% | 12.2% |
| High slot | 15% 20% | 8.3% |
| Left wing | 12% 7% | 3.8% |
| Right wing | 11% 8% | 4.6% |
| Blue line | 29% 10% | 2.1% |
| Behind the net | 3% 3% | 8.0% |
| Outside the zone | 4% 0% | 0.0% |
The inner slot takes 26% of the attempts but produces 50% of the goals. Shots from the blue line are 29% of attempts and just 10% of goals: most of their value is in the rebounds and deflections they create.
Who owns the slot
Model-basedEvery team fights for the same few square feet. The best get there often and keep opponents out; the worst are kept to the outside while giving up the middle.
Across: the share of a team’s own 5-on-5 attempts that come from home plate (the slot, between the faceoff dots). Up: the share of its opponents’ attempts from there, flipped so that keeping teams out is higher.
